Timing Chain for Eldorado
So I was talking to Charlie at the Rally about my Eldo. He mentioned I had a chain as opposed to gears like the earlier models.
In addition, there is a manually adjustable timing chain tensioner that needs attention every 10k or so. The alternative is to install a spring loaded
automatic tensioner. Went in there today to have a bit of a look about. Chain was definitely loose with visible wear on the plastic rubbing block.
Parts ordered and on their way.

Looks straightforward - well done. Hopefully it goes back together as easily as it came apart.

My chain ate its tensioner on my ‘74 Eldo. I wondered why I was getting some rattling, until Charlie took it apart. I actually found part of it (metal hook) in the sump. Must’ve passed through the oil pump.
My ‘71 Ambo is gear driven. Definitely some whine at higher revs.
Do you mark those gears BEFORE you take it apart?

Back in the day there was a gear conversion for those engines. I put one in my SP, straight cut gears it have a cool winding sound (like a supercharger).
Check it out. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hey Cam- yes- I placed the left cylinder at top dead center. At this position, there are two marks facing each other. One on the camshaft sprocket and the other on the crankshaft sprocket. The sprockets are keyed so provided the chain slips over them in this position, timing should be spot on.
Harry- That gear drive kit sure is tempting. I see a bunch of 850 models but no Eldorado. Did they use these designations on the continent or was it just an American thing?
