Update or Upgrade? Empty Update or Upgrade?

Finally got the V7 out of storage and took it for a little warm up ride yesterday. Glad to have it back in the garage.

As you all know I've been having visions of completing the tracker/scrambler customization but now, with 2018/19 leftovers, 0% interest and incentives everywhere, I'm thinking about upgrading to a different bike. Some of the things to consider are:
- longer travel, plusher suspension
- a bit more power would be nice
- more legroom and upright seating
- and maybe better dealer access

One option is to take a V9 Bobber with it's stronger engine and do a suspension upgrade. Since this isn't much different than the V7 project I'm

The other is to go with an out of the box adventure bike. First bike on my list is the V85TT but not having ridden one I wonder about the complaints of lower than expected torque at low RPM - not what I'm after. The other bikes I'm considering are a newer Triumph Scrambler with the improved chassis (2018+) or BMW F700/750 GS that have stronger engines than the F650GS I had earlier.

Cost IS a factor so that's where the V85 is challenging as it's not discounted like the Bobber. The Scrambler and GS are both available on the like-new used / leftover market at very attractive prices.

Been following the v85/V7 III/V9 thread on WG with interest. I know Kev and Cam have weighed in there but I'm interested in what others think.

These two caught my eye as cheaper V85 alternatives:

Trading your Guzzi in at Cross Country (BMW, Ducati, Triumph) might be a real shocker.

Harry - would sell the V7 privately. Motorcycle trade ins are notoriously bad - usually $1K or more below street value.

They wouldn't even take my Norge on a trade in.

I think it comes down to what you want out of the suspension.

All the upgrades in the world won't give the V7 or V9 suspension the same travel as the V85.

And by the time you spec new forks for the smallblocks has Elvis left the building?!?

That's why I'm thinking this through a little more. I enjoy the tertiary roads in NW part of the state and the V7 suspension, despite my admittedly budget upgrades beats on me. V85TT is certainly the Guzzi solution. A newer but used Triumph or BMW is a (much) lower cost approach. We'll see if a V85 is in the budget in a couple months. Who knows if the pandemic is going to impact my job so it's not a good time to assume too much more debt.

To continue the debate on upgrade or update, I see that Arrow now sells a low 2:1 exhaust system at a reasonable price. They have two versions, one with and one w/o the catalytic converter. Is there any reason to buy the Cat version at $150 more?

In the interest of future generations it would be the right thing to do.

Have talked to a couple dealers including Jim Hamlin. Looks like $4500 is the trade in value which is about what I expected. Cross Country was the worst at $3500.

Given that I now have to look at the financials. Makes sense to try and sell privately if I move forward with buying a new bike. $12K for a V85 (no discounts), or $9K for a 2019 Triumph Street Scrambler ($2K off).

At this point I may just wait for depreciation to do it's job and look for one of these bikes used next year. We'll see what happens with my listing...

So a Street Scrambler is a variation of a Bonneville?

Yes - the Scrambler is one of Triumph's retro models. Big updates in 2019 model make it worth considering.

Being an old time BSA guy I never liked Triumphs.  That said, you (we) have to be impressed with the products the company is putting out since their resurrection.
Unlike Guzzi and Beemer that have had their built in defects over the last couple of decades Triumph has been putting out a solid product year after year.  Dwight Blake got off his Beemer and onto a Triumph last summer and the reliability and fit and finish look as good as any bike out there and at a reasonable price.

If you read the reviews the 2019 model has taken their Classic line to a new level of performance too. Suspension, engine and geometry tweaks make for a very complete ride. I wish the V85 had some incentives - a $3K price differential is hard to ignore.

If you are set on getting a Triumph talk to Dustin Giuffrida in sales. I bought a 2019 T100 from him and got a great deal. Tell him I sent you. Cross Country will not give you a good trade on your V7. Jim Hamlin has a 2017 V9 Bobber for $6700. I had him upgrade my suspension and it is a completely different bike.

I corresponded with Jim today. He said that all the suspension tuning in the world won't make a V7 or V9 as good as a V85 on rough or unpaved roads. Said, "A v85 (or similar) is what you're after".

I've noticed on ebay some of the new V85 TT "Adventures" with the 3 boxes are now selling for $11,990. That $1K less than what I paid. They're 2020's.

Well, the 2nd HVAC guy just left and confirmed our system is shot. Looks like it's update for 2020 and I'll revisit an upgrade next year. Fun discussion while it lasted.

Posting Nick's picture on my desktop as a reminder. In the meantime, I'll hardly be suffering on the V7 and will have fun with the rear fender trimming and such.
