Riding during the shut down.
How do you guys feel about riding during the present shut down. I was going to go out today, but it didn't seem like the right thing to do. I found something to do on the bikes.

I'm OK with riding provided you take precautions if you stop somewhere. Bring a disposable set of gloves for pumping gas but I don't think I'd stop for food or bio break if possible.

I am absolutely fine with it. No better way to distance yourself, covered head to toe with gear. There's a thread on WG about this topic. At this point Rallies or breakfast meets, NO. Solo rides, hell YES. Police will not stop you. There's nothing enforceable about this. They're busy with other things.

Re: Riding during the shut down.
I think like with most things in life we have to use our own reasonable risk/reward assessment. Probably not a good idea to push it on performance or increase the risk of crashing or a breakdown that would require help, but I don't see any harm in reasonable rides and social distancing.
But we see people making these calls, and some of them hurtful, like the parents allowing their kids to gather with friends ("but it's only a few") or carrying on like there's no difference.
You gotta find your line and feel good with it. I'm ok with a little riding personally. Of course my kids being home 24/7 and my wife working in the hospital means I won't get many chances, but that's ok too.
Oh, on other fronts, I've only been out twice for grocery runs since we've been back from Ireland and I'm trying to keep it to that number.
Ironically Jenn had a rapid COVID test done Monday so she could return to work Tuesday and we're pretty damn sure her result means we were all negative as of then. But of course since she's been working in the unit and they've been sending her all over the hospital just to get her damn PPE (which is only consisting of a single surgical mask for the day right now unless she has to attend any COVID+ mom deliveries) so there's probably a greater chance for us to get and/or spread it now, so I'm going to continue to avoid the possibility of transmitting it just in case.

Last week I worked 7p to 7a all week , so I had no time for the bikes. All the parts have come in and I mounted the tires last night. I'd LOVE to ride right now, especially since there is barely any traffic on my commute now... Stay safe!!!

Re: Riding during the shut down.
I heard an interesting thing from a friend yesterday regarding the NJ "curfew" which I THOUGHT was a suggestion and not "mandatory" but a number of docs who work a DuPont and live in NJ have been stopped on their way home or on the way to work (depending on the shift) by NJ police enforcing "curfew".
Any other reports or info?!?

Re: Riding during the shut down.
My daughter has to stay late to cover for laid off people and her company gave her a letter saying that she was a critical employee.
She had to make the calls and tell about 20 people that worked directly for her they were laid off. Tough experience as many were friends.

I was under the impression that it was a "recommendation"

From what I'm seeing on the net; some people that have been stopped for traffic violations, have been asked where they are going. If they don't have a good answer (Just riding around isn't a good answer) the LEO writes a summons for violating the Stay at Home order. I don't remember anyone mentioning the time of day.

Re: Riding during the shut down.
I've got my answers prepared:
I'm going to my bank.
I'm going to a pharmacy.
I'm going to get some groceries.
I'm going to get some exercise, alone in the woods.
Look I've been alone with two little kids for going on 3 weeks. The wife is home from a shift at the hospital and I just needed to clear my head.

That's the weapon of last resort.
"Agent Conklin, I've got this guy here who says he knows you?
What was that? Shove a baton up his ?!?
Ok, we'll handle that for you.
Anything else we can do for you today?"

I actually did the bank, pharmacy and grocery errand on Saturday. Not that bad really. I did use the self check-out line. Be safe.

Re: Riding during the shut down.
I'll take answer #4: I'm going somewhere to get away from people. And besides, riding a motorcycle IS self-isolating!

I have Badge Americard ("Don't leave home without it"), and I'm not afraid to use it for a friend (sorry Kev). Fact is most local cops I know, and it's a LOT, don't wanna do shit unless it's a major crime. Riding your motorcycle isn't one. Your call.

Did a couple of short rides last week. None this week. Hard to know what to do...

Re: Riding during the shut down.
The intent of social distancing and non-essential travel is to limit transmission of the virus. To me, solo riding is about as self-isolating as you can get. While a pack of riders is sure to draw attention a single rider shouldn't be a cause of concern. That said and according to Gov Murphy:
... people can leave the house only for essential needs (such groceries, food, or medicine), to visit family or others you have a “close personal relationship” with (such as “a caretaker or romantic partner”), or to seek medical attention. You can also go outside for walks or exercise, according to the order.

Re: Riding during the shut down.
I've been working throughout this ordeal. Going to work I drive 78 East from Clinton (Exit 15) to 287. I take 287 North to Boonton (Exit 45 - a couple exits up from 80) I am sure that traffic was heavier this week at 6 AM then last week (Going the opposite way) at 7 AM. I think people are getting fed up and simply doing what they have to do...
