Re: Route movie to BMWRA Rally
In 1993 the only way for me to afford my first new motor vehicle of any kind (a new 93 Sporty) was to sell my post Chevy truck and go without a car. If course I lived more than an hour from work at the time. So that first winter I picked up a $500 Yamaha XS650 as my snow/ice beater bike.
By the end of the second or third winter I'd moved about 1.5 hours from work and had dropped my beater bike on black ice a few times. I had a whole supply of extra turn signals for the XS. hell I'd ridden the Sporty home through a snowstorm.
I finally said fuck it by 96 or 97 and took a small loan out for a used Geo Tracker!

Interesting time at the Beemer dealer,Nick,Mike,Jerry and myself. About 70% paved roads and it looks like at least half the dirt could be done on a street bike with regular tires. They were only riding 150 miles a day, seems kind of short, especially seeing as most of the route is paved.
.
.
BTW: They said last night this map was available on their site, but the site shows it out of stock. I'll order it when it's back in stock. We can use it for a group ride thru W. Virginia.

I thought it was said they did 60/40,40 % paved. Also possible to do 70/30.

What was the off road portion like? Single track / enduro grade stuff or just unimproved dirt roads? If the latter then maybe you really only need the right tires (if even then as Harry pointed out).

Re: Route movie to BMWRA Rally
I thought in the Q&A they said 70/30 and from the movie it seemed mostly paved. We'll have to wait to see the map. I know they were on Rt16 out of Damascus, Rt 340 out of Harpers Ferry, Rt220/38 in Warm Springs, Smoke Hole Road off of 220 East of Seneca Rocks, Rt 28 by Seneca Rocks, The Wilds in Pa. maybe Rt44. All roads some of us have been on.
It also showed a lot of those 14 foot wide (paved) back roads, those are the ones I'd be interested in finding.
They specifically avoided enduro type roads because the route was designed for big dual sport bikes (Adventure Bikes). I've been directed by the GPS to roads in W.Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia that were the same as the off road sections and they had State Highway numbers. They had a little wet grass but I think that was a side trip on private property as it showed them closing a gate as they were leaving. I think I would be a little hesitant to ride around someones corn field. Seems like it would be a good way to get a pitch fork or a John Deere up your butt.

Hey Mike,
Here is my off-road bike, with my son Zack on it (posing ;-) )

It's more comfortable than some of those bikes we saw, and it'll go through anything.
