What would you say? Empty What would you say?

Post by egschade Sat Jul 22, 2017 11:03 pm

So I was riding home from work yesterday when a kid on an older crotch rocket rolled up next to me at a stop. It was 89 degrees and humid, me wearing jeans, jacket and gloves, him in a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers. "Hey, must be hot in all that gear" he yells. I replied, "Yeah, but it's better to sweat than bleed." at which point we both rode off in different directions.

Got me to thinking a couple things: 1) what do you say when some numb nuts says something like that and 2) is there a better response? The other day I saw a video on motorcycle.com where a guy falls out of a wheelie and rashes himself up pretty horrifically. Maybe I should yell back "Google road rash accident if you want to know why".

On a related note, what do you do to stay cool but protected in weather like this? For me it's a perforated leather jacket and gloves.

How about "Yeah - do you know your fly is open?"

"Nope, not really, you should try it."

And I've had that conversation before.

Likely at the time I'd be in an armored mesh jacket with a neck cooling bandanna/wrap from Lowe's, plus gloves, jeans, boots.

Actually, one of the guys I ride with wears a t shirt, shorts, and boat shoes in the summer while I have on a perforated leather jacket, jeans, gloves, and boots.
We avoid preaching to each other and get along just fine but I do hope that if he does go down I'm not there!

Hey, to each it's own!
I would not lecture anyone on what to wear, as I would not want any one to lecture me on things I do or how I choose to ride....

I think it's all about exposure. If your only putting on a thousand miles a year you can get away with it, 20K is a different situation.

Yes I am one them, in the hot weather you will find me a tee shirt, jeans and boots most of the time.Yes I should know better, but I never listened to reason anyway .Been doing this for almost 40 years. Not bragging just stating the facts.Like it's been said different strokes for different folks.

My thing is that I actually don't care what others wear. I feel OK with helmet, gloves, riding pants, riding jacket and riding boots. What gets me is the stupid questions: Why do you wear all of that? Isn't it hot?
I would never ask another rider: why don't you wear a helmet/riding pants/ etc...? I really don't care.....

Wow....I'm a cranky old guy, ain't I? Wink

Nick - I'm in your camp. I feel vulnerable w/o the gear and that's my choice (phobia?). I don't comment on what other do or don't wear. I guess it just bugs me when someone does say something so I want a snarky comeback. There's another part of me that wants to help the other understand the risk they take but that's starting to sound preachy.

The only ones I do bug about it are my 3 sons who ride. Still feel a need to protect them at some level...

Somehow at the BMW National during a night of drinking I became a Canadian.  The brief ceremony somehow involved a blow up sheep, a conga line and singing Oh Canada.

On the gear question, I'd only have that discussion with someone I care about.

You can't pick when you'll need all of that abrasion protection (two feet from your driveway?) so just wear what floats your boat (and no one else's). Very Happy
