Ok I'm Out....
For a while at least.
Saturday I made a rookie mistake while blocking a fast and hard kick from a 5th degree black belt and shattered my right radius at the wrist where it took the force and hyperextended. Got my damn hand in a bad position and there too early to so instead of deflecting the kick it took all the force into the hand.
Surgery is scheduled for next week where I'll get some titanium parts for ME for a change, but I'll likely be off the bikes for weeks to come during recovery.
Grrrrrrrr.
Anyway, have a ride or two for me.

Yeah, lucky me. We were rocking and rolling enough in the drill that the instructor said "hold on, let me get this on film" so I've got a video of my wrist snapping, at least I kept fighting and kicked him twice afterwards (had to cause my right arm was useless).
Driving to the ER with the kids in the back of the Jeep was no fun, but it was only marginally better on the way home.

Thirty six years of training, I've busted the occasional toe, finger, or even rib, but man this one sucked.

Kev, WTF?
You'll be OK soon...you're a young man!
What are you trying to do, "out do" Jay?
Get well soon, and let me know if you need help (a hand ) with anything.
Nick

I know right, I was really counting on rubbing it in Jay's face every time I rode by sending him pics. Now it'll be a race to see who is back in the saddle first (still me I'm sure, unless I do something else even dumber).
Anyway, thanks man!

So THAT'S why we were drilled in leg blocks! (block-step-spinning back hand counter) But then again I didn't spar against a 5D BB.
Geez, bad luck. Better your wrist than the family jewels I suppose. Hope you have a speedy and full recovery. And remind me not to piss you off next time we're together - I wouldn't stand a chance.

Re: Ok I'm Out....
I should say it's a case of forgetting my opponent.
I've gotten very good over the years at deflecting and simultaneously catching a leg that I simply forgot I was going against someone who was younger, stronger, and faster.
Had I used a safer (but more pugilistic) block I might have bruised him but wouldn't have been caught like that.
So completely my own fault and that is what's frustrating me.
It was so avoidable.

Wow...
So serious...
You do know that you can use the other hand to hold a beer - right?
You can polish the bikes... You do Wax-On. Have somebody else do Wax-Off!
Wait - you're a writer... Crap! - Google voice to text will be your friend...
Seriously... Hope you don't get too frustrated with just one wing.
Eric

You could also consider changing your twist throttle to an ATV style thumb throttle. That plus some heavy duty Velcro to stick your cast to the bar and you'll be back on the road in no time! Just remember to only use the rear brake or borrow someone's Cali with linked brakes.

Surgery over, titanium plate and 5 screws!
Nerve block should last till tomorrow, gonna be at least 2 weeks till the post op.
Pain will probably start again tomorrow.

Glad things went well - your wrist beats my knee by 2 screws. Hope the pain is manageable without (or with minimal) prescription meds. Dealing with them can be worse than the injury.

Re: Ok I'm Out....
Sorry to hear about your misfortune Kev - I've been South for a few months.
Hope you're healing OK without too much pain. Looking at the radiograph it's hard to believe that they managed to get 5 screws into the end of your radius!

Re: Ok I'm Out....
Ha ha thanks.
Had my post op today and got the sutures out and got some new X-rays. Turns out I heard wrong it was more like 7 or 9 screws.
Healing nicely. Still gonna be off the bikes for a little while.
