Route movie to BMWRA Rally
Don't exactly know where to post this so I'll put it here>
There's a movie going around about a route from Damascus,Va to the RA rally location in Pennsylvania. Forest roads and back country roads (maybe doable on a street bike ?). It's being shown in different locations and will be in New Jersey on February 2.
Escape the city and discover the Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route, a scenic dual-sport adventure on dirt, gravel and paved roads through remote parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Starting in Damascus, VA, and ending in Lawrenceville, Tioga County, PA. This 1,080-mile route primarily uses forest roads and rural country lanes through the Appalachian mountains, majestic forests, bucolic farming landscapes, Amish country, and locations that played pivotal roles in early American history.

Right now I'm 90% -- I'll check the weather on Monday and make the call. Rt287 is an adventure during rush hour and even better in the dark. Any kind of bad weather would make it a NO GO for me.
Looking at the site where you buy tickets I noticed this:
"Pre-Film Party: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Meet members of the BDR team, enjoy light refreshments, and socialize with fellow adventure riders."
Seeing as I ride a R1200R and not a GS I wonder if that disqualifies me from being an Adventure Rider.

Looks like I can go. Anyone interested in meeting for an early dinner at 4:30 pm @ The Skylark Diner in Edison on RT1? I know a back way over to Metuchen from there. Harry, RT 18 to RT 1 is a good alternative to 287.

Well Gentlemen (and Ladies), are we going to this or not? Who is going? It's next Friday, it's in Central Jersey, it's $10 (Guzzi content) and looks interesting

I was going to go/ I would have went/when was it?
OK I have my ticket, bought and paid for. I just hope the 'Adventure Riders' will let street bike riders in. Maybe we'll have to sit in the back.

Re: Route movie to BMWRA Rally
I just hope they have the route available on paper or GPX file. I think I'll bring a flash drive. This might be an interesting way to get to or from the ROK rally as Damascus is only a hundred miles from Del Rio.
I'm thinking Gettysburg Work weekend and doing this backward to get to ROK. I don't think getting to ROK early would be a problem.
Just sayin

I'm interested to see how intense this route is. I've looked at videos from the Colorado and Idaho BDR routes and parts of them are pretty intense. A KLR 650 kind of routes. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Or maybe this bike

Nick - it's not the make of bike but the willingness of the rider...

Eric, I've been watching many of those videos this afternoon, and yes the rider has to be good, but the bikes also need to be off-road capable.
Just mounting knobby tires on a road bike does not make it a dual sport.
This sort of riding may ultimately not be my thing, but I could be interested

Re: Route movie to BMWRA Rally
I had a good friend (gone now) say 'All motorcycles are dirt bikes, some are just better then others' I posted the same notice on a Beemer site and someone questioned 'Doable'. My answer:mogu83 wrote: Forest roads and back country roads (maybe doable on a street bike ?). .[/i].
Most of these Dual Sport films show riders in the top 10% of the Adventure Rider group and I would imagine in top physical condition (very few over 50). Remember we're talking Dual Sport not dirt bike, these things go almost 600 pounds before the rider puts his camping gear on. You would have to be an 800 pound gorilla to pound something like that through the woods.mogu83 wrote: Wider than a Goat Path, rocks smaller than a grapefruit, water less than a foot deep and sand not deeper than six inches. Doable on street tires.
Many, maybe most, of these big dual sports have never been on anything rougher than a hard packed dirt road. I always make a point to check them out at rallies, Four and five year old bikes without a dent or scratch, rims without a mark on them, skid plate as smooth as it came out of the box and saddle bags that look like new. Many of the old guys in the Beemer camp consider the GS/GSA line of Beemers the new Harley Davidson. Think Walter Mitty.
So Seeing as someone is making (selling) this route to the general public (the other 90%), I'm thinking there won't be any three foot deep stream crossings or climbing over rocks two feet high and if you draw a line between North Central PA and Bristol,Va you shouldn't cross much sand. I'm thinking the worst thing will be uphill on wet grass - deadly with a heavy bike and street tires.
That said, a rider might want to put some miles on a 'dirt bike' before venturing on a path that might present some challengers that require reaction instead of a thought process. A motorcycle with both wheels sliding sideways while still moving forward is an unique feeling and if you hit the brakes or put your foot down your in trouble.

If I ever get serious about doing the Dalton Highway it will be on a DR-Z400S. Trailer to Montana and head North.
It would need an aftermarket tank.

Nope - no car. When Verizon moved in 3 miles from my house I sold my POS car and started riding FT. I usually take the long way which is closer to 9 mi so the bike can warm up (and it's more fun).
Yes - I ride every day weather permitting. Rain is OK but I don't do ice or snow.
If I don't ride I walk or get a ride.
Last year there was only the one big storm that kept me off the road for a couple weeks. This year is worse in that there are all these pissy little 'weather events' that make riding unsafe - mostly rain/sleet/snow mixes with temp hovering right around freezing. If things stay above freezing it's no biggie. If they drop below for my ride home it can be dicey. Night riding and black ice are a deadly combination.
Today I'm getting a ride to work because I don't have the V7 set up for cold weather yet. Will install my big windshield and hand guards this weekend.
